Humanitarianism & World
Order
Humanitarianism is a global,
transnational, and local activity, one that generates a range
of practices - from relief to saving failed states, by state
and nonstate actors, around the world. By definition humanitarianism
is interdisciplinary and interspatial. The disciplines in
the social, physical, and health sciences are all involved
in different aspects of humanitarianism; any project that
intends to provide relief in complex humanitarian emergencies
and imagines building new states to mitigate human misery,
by definition, deploys and engages knowledge from across
the disciplines. The humanitarian system has grown steadily
over the last fifty years, and since the 1980s it has exploded
in significance, size, and scope.
The broad goal of the project is to establish humanitarian
studies on UW campus. This goal will be achieved by organizing
speaker series; through introducing one course, either at
the graduate or undergraduate level, each year dedicated
to the subject of humanitarianism; and through encouraging
research in this area, by faculty and graduate students.
The initiative also intends to create linkages across campus,
with nongovernmental organizations, international organizations,
and other leading universities in the United States and abroad
