AAUW University Scholar-in-Residence Award 2006-07

Summary
The AAUW Educational Foundation invites letters of intent from colleges and universities in the United States to fund a female scholar to conduct a research project on issues related to gender equity in education and/or economic security for women and girls. Each year, the Foundation awards a single grant of $100,000 for a two-year research project.

Applicants are asked to submit a letter (no more than three pages) describing the research project by Dec. 1. A small group of applicants are then selected to submit a full proposal, due Feb. 1. The final award is announced in May with funding beginning in July. Criteria for selection for the AAUW University Scholar-in-Residence Award are described below, along with more details about the application process.

Criteria
Proposals will be judged based on four criteria: quality of scholarship; potential impact of the project; cost sharing and budget; dissemination plan.

1.Quality of scholarship - This criterion includes the proposed scholar's demonstrated expertise in research and writing and the originality of the proposed research project.
2. Impact - This criterion includes the relevance of the research topic to the AAUW mission and current research agenda, clarity of stated outcomes, and potential for research to affect lasting change on a local and national level.
3. Cost Sharing and Budget - This criterion includes the feasibility of costs and timeline, evidence of institutional support, and planning for efficient use of the grant.
4. Dissemination - This criterion includes potential for local and national visibility and collaboration with AAUW national or branch activities.

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported. (For support at the undergraduate level, visit www.isep.org.)

Six of the awards are available to members of International Federation of University Women affiliate organizations. These fellowship recipients may study in any country other than their own.

The Foundation also awards several annual Home Country Project Grants ($5,000 to $7,000 each) to women who received AAUW Educational Foundation International Fellowships between 2001 and 2006. These grants support community-based projects designed to improve the lives of women and girls in the fellow's home country.

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund was established in 1949 to provide scholarships for international women students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada.

An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in the college or university of her choice in the United States or Canada. Eligibility must be established before application material is sent to applicants. Applicants must promise to return to her own country to pursue her professional career. Doctoral students who have completed course work and are working on dissertations only are not eligible as first-time applicants. Additional financial resources must be confirmed before receiving grants-in-aid. Scholarships are not given for research, internships, nor for practical training. In order to qualify for her first scholarship, an applicant must have a full year of class work remaining and be enrolled and on campus for the entire school year. A student who has received an AAUW grant will be ineligible for an IPS scholarship during the same academic year. She will be eligible to apply for an IPS scholarship for the following year. The applicant must have her round trip or return travel expense guaranteed at the time of application.

South African Association of Women Graduates (SAAWG)*

Hansi Pollak Scholarship - postgraduate research directed towards bettering social conditions in South Africa. The recipient is required to spend at least two years in South Africa after completing the degree, implementing the results of the research. Every two years.

Joan Whitmore Scholarship - postgraduate study or research in the broad field of engineering at a university or technikon. Applicants must show evidence of the relevance of their study or research to the development of South Africa, and of their community service. This scholarship is administered by the University of Pretoria.

The International Federation of University Women


The International Federation of University Women offers a limited number of fellowships and grants to women graduates for advanced research, study and training. The competitions are normally held every two years.

IFUW's next competition will offer awards for the 2008/2009 academic year. Application materials will be available beginning in March 2007.

IFUW fellowships and grants are open only to women graduates who are members of the IFUW'S international federations and associations and to IFUW International Members. The awards are intended for the second and subsequent years of a doctoral programme and for post-doctoral studies. First year doctoral students do not qualify. A small number of awards may be available for Masters' level studies.

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund Grants For Women From Developing Countries

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) was established in 1981 to honor the late Margaret McNamara and her commitment to the well-being of women and children in developing countries. The purpose of the grant is to support the education of women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in their home countries. Previous grant recipients were studying fields such as agriculture, architecture and urban planning, civil engineering, education, forestry, journalism, nursing, nutrition, pediatrics, public administration, public health, social sciences, and social work.

ELIGIBILITY
The MMMF invites women who meet all of the following criteria to apply:
· She has a record of service to women and/or children in her country.
· She must reside in the U.S. at the time she submits the application.
· She plans to return to her country in about two years.
· She can demonstrate financial need.
· She is enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the U.S. by September 2003 and during the entire period covered by
the grant.
· She must use the grant to continue to study for her degree.
· She is a national of a developing country that is currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank and cannot be a U.S. Green Card holder.
· She is at least 25 years old by December 31, 2003.
· She is not related to any World Bank Group staff member or his/her spouse.
